What is a MERV Rating?
What is a MERV Rating? What is MERV? MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This rating measures how much matter can pass through your air filter. These values vary and you may have seen this on the side of your filter, possibly a MERV 8 at your home or business. A MERV 8 will trap things such as mold spores, pet dander, dust mites, aerosol sprays, etc. This filter type is the most popular, and what we suggest to all of our homeowners. When looking at a MERV rating you may think that the higher the number the better. However, that is not the case. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the pores on the filter are. Higher MERV can cause restricted airflow to your furnace. When airflow is restricted this can cause the system to use more energy.
Replacing your furnace filter should be a task that you should always keep on your to-do list. Expert chooses to refer to the replacement track that depending on the width of your filter is when you should replace it. One-inch filters should be replaced monthly, while four-inch filters should be replaced every three to four months depending on the conditions of your home. If you have allergies or pets you should consider changing your filter more often. We have a wide variety of filter stocked at our location. However, if you are looking for a customer sized filter, we can get that for you as well.
